The Sailor entries in the Indian Navy are as follows-

Artificer Apprentice

The role of an AA is to operate and maintain the sophisticated equipment of the Indian Navy and overcome the technical challenges. They deal with diesel and gas turbines, electrical power systems, steam-powered machinery, computers, advanced radios, sensor avionic equipment, etc.

Senior Secondary Recruit

They actually handle things on ships and serve in the modern ships of the Navy. They deal with equipment like aircraft carriers, replenishment ships, sonars, guided-missile destroyers, missiles, guns, rockets, etc.

Matric Recruit

Their major duties involve working as a chef, steward, or sanitary hygienist. Apart, from it, they handle everything on ship apart from what AA and SSR do. They perform the lookout duties, hand small arms, assist in ship’s landing and boarding, etc.

Matric Recruit (Musician)

They are employed as sailors as well and undergo the same training as AA and SSR.

The Indian Navy Sailor exam is conducted twice a year. The advertisement for respective entries is published in newspapers in January and July. Recently the online application was closed for the August 2021 batch. The exam dates for the January session has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is as follows-

The honor and pride of serving the motherland cannot be measured in money but the Indian Navy pays well to its sailors and takes care of their every need.

During the training period, the candidates are provided a stipend of Rs. 14600/-. ‘X’ group artificer apprentices sailors would be eligible for ‘X’ group pay @ Rs. 3,600/- per month whilst undergoing training and on completion of training post acquiring diploma approved by AICTE, ‘X’ group pay @ 6,200/- per month would be eligible.

When the candidates complete the initial training, they are placed in the Defence Pay Matrix Level 3. All the sailors are divided into two groups ‘X’ and ‘Y’. The salary increases as the candidates are promoted. The promotion of candidates solely relies on the vacancies available.

Who Can Apply?

Only unmarried male candidates who are citizens of India can apply.

Age Limit

The candidates should be aged between 17-20 years.

Educational Qualification

AA- Qualified in 10+2 examination with 60% or more marks in aggregate with Maths & Physics and at least one of these subjects:-

Chemistry/Biology/Computer Science from the Boards of School Education recognized by MHRD, Govt. of India.

SSR- Qualified in 10+2 examination with Maths & Physics and at least one of these subjects: -

Written Examination- This is the first stage of the examination and those who clear the exam qualify for the Physical Fitness Test.

The height and weight should be in proportion to the age.


Permanent tattoos on any part of the body are not allowed except for the inner face of forearms from elbow to wrist and on the reverse side of the palm.
