CDS Overview

CDS or Combined Defence Services Examination is a national level examination that is conducted by Union Public Service Commission twice a year to recruit young unmarried candidates into the Indian Naval Academy, Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, and Indian Air Force Academy.

CDS Salary

A candidate must know the ins and outs of an exam before appearing for it. A candidate who undergoes training as a cadet gets a fixed stipend and other perks. The salary of Officers varies as per their rank after they are commissioned into the Indian Navy, Army, or Air Force.

The stipend to both gentleman and lady cadets is fixed at Rs. 56,100 per month.  The ranks of the commissioned officers along with their pay is as follows-

CDS Exam Dates

The CDS exam is conducted twice a year by UPSC in the months of February and September. CDS (I) 2021 has been conducted by UPSC and the results are out. CDS Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must fall within this eligibility criterion to appear in the CDS exam.


A citizen of India, or Nepal, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.


The minimum age for appearing in the CDS exam is 19 years. The maximum age limit differs for the various academies.

  • 22 years – Indian Naval Academy

  • 24 years – Air Force Academy

  • 24 years – Indian Military Academy

  • 25 years – Officer’s Training Academy

Sex and Marital Status

  • IMA- Only unmarried male candidates can apply.

  • INA- Only unmarried male candidates can apply

  • AFA- 20-24 years of age, both men and women can apply. Upper age limit for candidates holding valid CPL license issued by DGCA I 26 years.

  • OTA (SSC for Men)- Unmarried male candidates. Candidates below 25 years of age must be unmarried. Male divorce or widower candidates are not to be treated as unmarried.

  • OTA (SSC for Women)- Unmarried women, issueless widows who have not remarried, and issueless divorcees are eligible

Educational Qualification

  • For I.M.A. and Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai — Degree of a recognized University or equivalent.

  • For Indian Naval Academy—Degree in Engineering from a recognized University/Institution. F

  • For Air Force Academy—Degree of a recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.

Candidates should check the official notification for in-depth details and ensure that they fall under the eligibility criteria. If at any time during the recruitment process, a candidate is found to be ineligible, the candidature will be cancelled.

CDS Exam Pattern

CDS exam is going to be conducted in the month of November. Understanding the exam pattern and going through your entire syllabus helps you to draw an outline for your preparation.

The exam is conducted in three stages-

  • Written Examination

  • SSB Interview

  • Medical Test

Written Exam

  • The exam pattern for OTA differs a little from the exam pattern for IMA, INA, and AFA.

  • The paper for OTA is divided into two sections- English and General Knowledge.

  • The paper for IMA, INA, and AFA is divided into three sections- English, Elementary Mathematics, and General Knowledge

  • Each section is made up of 100 objective type multiple choice questions, each carrying one mark.

  • One-third mark is deducted for each incorrect answer. No mark is awarded for unattempted questions.

  • Candidates are provided two hours to solve each section.

SSB Interview

This is a five-day interview which is conducted by the Service Selection Board at one of its centers. Those candidates who top the merit list of written examination are called for SSB Interview. Various kinds of written tests, individual tasks, Group Tasks, Interview, and Conference consist of SSB Interview.

On the first day, a Screening Test is conducted. It includes Officer Intelligence Rating Test and Picture Perception and Description Test.  Candidates who pass the Screening Test make it to the next stage. Those who fail are sent back home on the very first day. Candidates who are willing to join AFA are required to undergo the PABT test.

Rest four days are reserved for the several other tests and tasks, such as Psychological Test, Individual Tasks like Command Task, Individual Obstacles Task, Individual Lecturette, Group Tasks like Group Obstacle Race, Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise, and Interview, Conference, and result declaration on the last day.

Medical Test

There are certain medical standards that are tested during the medical test. Candidates who are fit according to these standards are recruited in the various academies.

CDS SSB Interview- Syllabus

 At the first stage, i.e. Screening Test, a candidate’s logical and problem-solving skills are assessed by asking different kinds of questions involving figures, patterns, pictures, etc. The PPDT test assesses how a candidate thinks about a subject.

The verbal and non-verbal test includes relationship, jumbled words, antonym and synonym, reconstruction of the sentence, one-word substitution, odd one out, common sense, alphabet test, arithmetic questions, completion of series, etc.
